Does the law of diminishing returns apply to the employer-employee relationship?

Do issues like salary compression, creation of a comfort zone, increasing involvement in organizational dynamics, over-understanding of systems (and the loopholes therein), boredom etc. make the employer-employee relationship mutually less beneficial over a period of time?
